The gambling addict, from Dunstable in Bedfordshire, stated that when he had won he was probably hooked without realising it as he could not wait till the next week to get a brand-new football slip.

It was only in the early hours one morning about 15 years later that he understood he had a betting issue - and already he had 72p in his bank account.

Hart said he used to get ₤ 10 pocket money from his parents and "all of an abrupt I am getting a lot more cash by winning bets".

He stated with that income he "could not wait to do it again; it was such a terrific feeling".

From the age of 21, it started to end up being a bigger problem when he began positioning bets with greater stakes.

For the last five years of his betting life, horse racing was the only thing he would bet on, he stated.

At 29 years old, he believed "this can not go on anymore" and he handled to discover a rehab centre through a charity called Gordon Moody.

He entered into rehab on 13 November 2023 for a 14-week domestic stay.

He explained it as "the very best choice I have ever made" and since coming out of rehab he stated he had actually not put a single bet.

Hart said that it was only after going to Gordon Moody that he exercised he had actually lost more than ₤ 250,000.

He likewise understood he had actually been heavily targeted by gambling marketing, which he referred to as "a genuine big issue".

"You can not go anywhere without seeing gambling, you can not listen to the radio without hearing betting adverts, and you can't even get on a bus without seeing betting adverts on the billboards," he added.

"I suffered in silence for a long time where I was living from pay cheque to pay cheque and all my cash went on gambling.

"I was hiding my gaming and I did not want anyone to understand how much I was losing.

"That is when it ends up being a problem. It was not satisfying. It was type of if I do not win this bet then the expenses are not making money."

'Silent dependency'

With racing's Cheltenham Festival under way, Hart said perhaps gamblers should think whether they have an issue if they recognised themselves in what he was saying.

He stated he had lost a lot of loved ones due to his gambling as he was borrowing money off them.

He included: "If somebody is taking drugs or drinking alcohol it is more apparent, however betting is a quiet dependency."

A representative for the Gambling Commission regulatory body stated there were "strict rules governing the advertising of gambling ... which are created to make sure that marketing communications for gambling products are socially accountable, with particular regard to the requirement to secure kids, young persons under 18 and other vulnerable individuals from being damaged or exploited by marketing that includes or promotes betting".

They added that "targeted action around marketing and sponsorship is required, especially to better ensure that children and people who might be vulnerable have actually substantially lowered direct exposure".
